I couldn’t work out which blog system I liked best so I’ve decided to play the two off for a few months … I’m going over to a new place http://www.avenue57.blogspot.co.uk

My main (only!) reason is that uploading pictures is SOOOO much easier and as it’s a fashion site with photos being the main feature I’d say it was a good call to make!

Hope everyone follows me over there and I hope to post more (just need to find some more time in the day!)

I recently came back from Portugal.  We stayed in the most amazing place .. I want to tell you but I don’t .. what if you all love it as much as I do and you all go … and it becomes too busy??!  Ok then, it’s Burgau .. it’s absolutely gorgeous, cobbled streets and authentic fresh food every day – we love staying there (have been twice now!)

We were flying with EasyJet – really not bad at all but with the luggage allowance and knowing how strict they are I had to pack lightly!

Burgau can be cold at night – very very windy and so I knew I’d have to take a cardigan and a few scarves.

The villa we stayed in was really fabulous and even more so because of the walk in wardrobe – it was HUGE  I don’t think my photos do it any justice

So, onto what I wore over the week – some outfits were because we were bbqing at home (shorts and harem pants!), others were because it was darn windy and cold (grey cashmere cardigan) and some were a mistake (floral dress that was too short – I must have had a growth spurt!)

What do you wear on hols?  What are your favourite outfits?

When Sera from The Agoraphobic Fashionista asked if anyone wanted to join her in a blogger style challenge I replied immediately with two hands in the air like an over keen 7 yr old in a classroom. So did Avril from School Gate Style and Gem from Bookworm Mummy

The brief was to spend £20 in Matalan on ONE outfit. You could add ONE item of your own to complete/compliment the look.

So last Friday I cleared some time from my day and headed off to our local store, it’s been a whilst since I’d been to Matalan so I had no idea what to expect .. I just know that a lot of women shop there – proof here

I was positive they had a sale on as do most stores at the moment but when I arrived I saw NO red sale boards in the window .. Now Matalan is renowned for low prices but even £20 for 1 outfit was starting to look doubtful at first glance.

However … 1 hr later, lots of items picked up and I couldn’t carry any more things – seriously this shop is amazing and they have SO MANY brilliant items – pencil skirts, capri pants, boyfriend jeans, maxi dresses – seriously, every item you want or need and every look you’re trying to achieve can be done – VERY VERY easily …

So in true Fiona style, I couldn’t pick just one outfit .. I had to make up a few! All outfits are within the £20 budget and for the most part it’s the shoes I’ve added that are my own.

Which one is your favourite? The jury is out on the leggings – patterned leggings on a 38 year old?!

My favourite outfit is the middle one:

Lemon skinny jeans – £13
White Vest top – £3
Feather necklace – £3.50
Shoes – New Look and my own (£14.99)

So how did everyone else style their outfit for £20?

Thanks again to Sera for a great challenge!

So, following on from last week we have been wearing different outfits every day.  We’re quickly heading towards the half way mark and it’s been surprisingly easy to do .. the weather has helped as I can wear winter clothes in the summer, spring clothes on the warmer days and I might actually get to wear my summer clothes when I go abroad next week!

Here we are in our outfits for the past 7 days … it hasn’t been hard but it’s been fun wearing old stuff!  I have more outfits as I went out a few times over the weekend so double outfit days on Friday and Saturday!

For more great daily looks check out the site – http://www.avenue57.com

Until next week

I started last week to do a 30 day style challenge. Inspired by this blog post.

I decided to see if I could do it (I knew I would be able to as I spent 5 months last year not wearing the same outfit twice!) – so I invited a few other lovely ladies from Avenue 57 to join in too – it’s fun discovering items you’ve not worn for a while and it’s really easy with the weather as one day I’m summer wardrobe and the next winter!

Here are some of us with our 7 looks over 7 days, I’ll update again next week

Ok, so 2 weeks to go until we go on our holiday. The beauty is we’ve been to this place before so I know that heels are totally out (cobbled streets and lots of steep hills) so then I’m wondering how many pairs of flip flops are too many – I say you can never have too many and I currently own about 15 pairs in all sorts of colours!

Do you lay out your clothes as outfits before you go?

Do you just shove EVERYTHING in the case and if it fits in then it goes with you?

Do you scrimp what you pack for the husband/partner/children in order to allow a little bit more room for yourself?

What’s your strategy?

Mine is to lie out in advance and work out what goes with what.  I really don’t want to over pack this year, I’ve done it too many times in the past and I’m hoping this year I might finally have learnt that less is more if you are creative and can spend some time working it out.  The other way is to create the outfit on the bed, take a photo, then mix the outfit up and take a new photo – that way you have a visual diary of what to wear when you get there!

I DO pack less for the family so I have more room for myself and if there is space 1hr prior to leaving the house for the airport then I shove that last minute pair of sandals in ‘just in case’

I only ever take one handbag, although this year I might sneak in a clutch or too as I don’t carry much/a purse.

Tell me your holiday packing secrets, here are my 2 (couldn’t limit it to one!)

My best tip ever in the whole world (and it’s not to do with clothes) is to take a 4 way extension lead so that you can use one travel plug for the extension cable and then charge up to 4 electrical items – we have to charge: 2 computers, 2 Blackberries, 1 phone and  2 Ds’s!

A few years ago I compiled a spreadsheet with all the items we’d need – ie passports, tickets, sun cream, towels, toothbrush, medicine for the children, comforters, dummies etc etc – I spent about 30 mins doing this and saved it .. year on year I print it out and it’s a great way to ensure you have everything you’ll need when away – I appreciate this is making me sound a tad anal and too organised but it just saves time when you have it already written out in a simple list form with bold headers for “clothes”, “toiletries”, “medicine”, “electronics”, “paperwork” and so on ….

Other tips that we can/should all follow:

  1. Weigh your bags – if you are flying on restricted baggage allowance then this is my number 1 top tip –the fees for overweight bags at the airport are ridiculous.  We simply weigh my husband on his own on the bathroom scales.  He then weighs himself with the packed bag and we work out what must go/be taken out as I ALWAYS over pack!
  2. Roll your clothes – Saves on space and creases!
  3. Wrap delicate items with socks/tshirts.
  4. Put all toiletries in a plastic bag and then another one – just supermarket carrier bags work fine – if one bottle splits then you haven’t ruined all of your clothes!
  5. Wear to the airport your heaviest items – jeans/boots and ALWAYS ALWAYS wear a fleece/cardigan etc – I’ve lost count how many times I’ve arrived back to a storm in the UK wearing flip flops and a vest top!
  6. Use your child’s trunki for heavy items!  They don’t weigh this part of the hand luggage and it fits well within hand luggage regulations.

So go on, tell me your secrets to stress-free packing when going on holiday …
